The Sound That's Made By Worms!
Sorry I haven't updated in an even logner period than last time! I've had some things on my mind lately - among other things, my grandfather (who was a father figure to me) recently passed. I've also been working on a long post about the problems of Growth Socialism, including Fully Automated Luxury Communism and other silliness! Watch this space! My very deep thanks to the very cool people who have graciously looked over my crappy drafts!
[...]
Deep down, I know that earthworms almost certainly aren't persons and my attempts at deep insights into their psychology are misguided, but I tend to think it's better to err on the side of animal personhood than the alternative. The opposite impulse is how we end up with notables like Eliezer Yudkowsky saying that consciousness is unique to primates and other animals can be disregarded. Be nice to animals, folks!

found some old stuff
stuff that was already old when I got it. I went over to where I have a storage building full of stuff I've hoarded and grabbed a few things to bring to the new building that I have different stuff I've hoarded. I expect most of the stuff I got today might be of interest to internet nerds. I guess I'll do this in list form.

Wishing and hoping
Moderation vs abuse materials is one example: the harassers and abusers are coming up with practical means to post their shit whereas we can’t really stop that in any real, practical sense, only (half-bakedly) shield ourselves from seeing it.
[...]
I’ve sometimes inadvertently butted heads with people in the past where they’re greenhat & creative & trying desperately to think of practical solutions (like using copyright licenses to enforce good social behavior) and I’m like “I’m not sure that’d work practically and legally because such-and-such-and-such practical problem with that” and I get labeled the enemy.

third
today was just another day at work... i got a little stressed at work at one point, it's kind of embarrassing looking back... but it's fine, i'm fin. i have 5 days off in a row now, so that's chill, i guess. frustrating that i'm hardly getting money lately but whatever, i can pay for groceries and my bills so it's good enough i think.
i think... fronting like this for the first time in months has been fucking me up a little. sometimes it feels like i'm taking steps back, even though i know it's not my fault i can't remember what our growth has been like. it just feels like i fell asleep for months and woke up again.

Three interesting ways of knowing
It is the function, then, of science, to subdivide that black box into many smaller black boxes, by testing hypotheses that relate certain inputs to certain outputs.
In this sense, science doesn't uncover truth; it approaches truth asymptotically. There will always be more boxes to break up. Science will hypothesize about correlations forever, until the questions it begs to ask literally cannot be answered through direct observation
Science is about models. In the words of George Box, "all models are wrong, but some are useful."

Finger Log 2024-03-10
Due to some drama involving nginx and the forking of nginx to freenginx, I have decided to make my own server to handle proxying. Trying to make it as simple as I can in terms of lines of code and in terms of each proxying/serving rule requiring 1 and only 1 line in a config file. Calling the project "seriesoftubes" (Series of Tubes).

Aggregators, Search Engines, the Early Web, and Gemini
I recently saw a post (all links below) of someone who said he was quitting Gemini, due to its liberal bias. I wanted to weigh in a bit, because I've seen this argument before, that Gemini is liberal, and people cannot be heard due to censorship.
Antenna has banned a few people with strong conservative or non-mainstream ideas. I don't know that DSN Antenna (different capsule) has banned anyone, but it says on the front of the capsule that "Operator of DSN Antenna may remove any post or ban any domain at their own discretion."

* Gemini (Primer) links can be opened using Gemini software. It's like the World Wide Web but a lot lighter.
