Over-Enforcement of a Code of Conduct (CoC) Would Ruin Events, Maybe Not for Corporate Posters, Sponsors, Posers, and Speakers
People are imperfect; turning events into "marketing brochures" and billboards (ads, a shrine for corporate supremacy) would not serve people
THIS past hour our IRC network got attacked (spammed heavily), probably by this cretin (who had harassed my wife just hours earlier). Society has its share of misogynists and you cannot just arrest them. It's part of what society is.
Censorship attempts by the DebConf22 organiser in Kosovo resulted in nothing but embarrassment. Yes, the misogynists just bring more attention to themselves.
I've long encountered misogynists and - quite similarly - women-harassing people in person. One example was a GNOME release party. At least one person made inadequate remarks not only to my wife but also to the wife of the party's organiser (something of a sexual nature; I'd rather not reproduce this here). But other than that, the event was friendly and its atmosphere was positive. Many people talked to other people, there were women and trans women attending, there was some food, and people even took photos at the end or towards the end.
Society is generally imperfect. Mass-banning of people rarely results in any improvement. Censorship of articles does not help either. In Debian, women seem to be getting censored for talking about how poorly women are treated. How does that help women? █
