Eben Moglen Discusses GPLv3 and Patents: It Avoids or Prevents Companies Like Novell or IBM Making a Pact With the Invader (Microsoft)
From the GPLv3's launch event:
Video: Eben Moglen Discusses GPLv3 and Patents
ALMOST 17 years ago Eben Moglen and Richard Stallman launched the latest version of GNU's General Public Licence (or "License" in the US). It was version 3 (GPLv3) and it has not been superseded since then. The second version of the licence, version 2 of the GPL (GPLv2), was released in 1991, so it lasted 16 years - i.e. less than GPLv3.
This old video shows Professor Moglen explaining the logic behind creating the licence and encouraging its adoption, especially when it comes to curbing collusion around patent "protection", as Novell's Ron Hovsepian (formerly of IBM) and Steve Ballmer did 18 years ago, reportedly after prodding by Miguel de Icaza. He and Nat Friedman made an entire career for themselves by working for the invader to the detriment of the community that's being attacked. Friedman is still working in a senior position at Microsoft while sanitising his Wikipedia page. █
