Diaspora is Dying. It Also 'Killed' One of its Cofounders.
Hours ago in IRC darwin asked, "is Diaspora dead? i asked for help years ago and after months on forum & IRC never got it so I asked if it's dead then just got accusations and still no help" (because the sincere answer is a tad complicated; Diaspora is Free software anyone can adopt and it has many pods, but it's in trouble because JoinDiaspora died 2 years ago and growth momentum is long lost).
Debian forbade speaking about a suicide connected to Debian.
Diaspora was less overzealous about the matter, but cause of death was not published, only the death itself. It took almost half a year to confirm the cause of death [1, 2] and many were left assume he had died for health reasons:
But his parents state that this Free software project, which is now more or less dead (everything but "officially"), led to his death:
Wikipedia, citing two sources from the mainstream media [ 1, 2].
Meanwhile a key component of Diaspora has become proprietary software. Redis was a pain in the bum when I installed Diaspora about a decade ago. █
