Hackaday ☛ A Simple And Effective 3D Filament Splicer
There are times in every 3D print enthusiast’s life when it would be convenient to join two pieces of filament. The problem with simply melting them together is that the resulting join has a blob of plastic surrounding it which has difficulty making it through the printer’s internals. [Pete Prodoehl] has a solution, in the form of a well-executed splicing jig that’s sure to leave a join which will glide through your printer.

Hackaday ☛ The Dar Es Salaam Hacker Scene And Gamut Detection
We’re on a sort of vacation in Tanzania at the moment and staying in a modest hotel away from the tourist and government district. Everybody’s amazingly friendly here, the hotel guy grilled us for an hour about our home state. But I really didn’t expect to end up in a conversation about computer vision.

Techdirt ☛ San Diego Mayor, Police Chief Claim City’s Surveillance Oversight Law Is Just ‘Obstruction’
Law enforcement agencies aren’t used to oversight or accountability. That’s something that has rarely been deemed essential to the act of policing. After all, if the Supreme Court can create “qualified immunity” out of thin air to protect (most) cops from the consequences of their unconstitutional actions, surely podunk locals shouldn’t assume they’re more qualified than the Supreme Court (or the cops themselves) to judge their actions.

Federal News Network ☛ Maine officials lift shelter-in-place order as search for mass shooting suspect continues
Authorities are scouring hundreds of acres of family-owned property, sending dive teams to the bottom of a river and scrutinizing a possible suicide note in the second day of their intensive search for an Army reservist accused of a mass shooting in Maine. Two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that authorities found an apparent suicide note in a home associated with suspect Robert Card on Thursday. They said his cellphone also was found there. Police lifted a shelter in place order Friday evening and released the names of the 18 people who were killed. They were 16 males and two females ranging in age from 14 to 76.

Federal News Network ☛ Live Updates | Authorities name all 18 Maine mass shooting victims and lift shelter-in-place order
Maine’s public safety commissioner has named all 18 victims of the mass shooting in Lewiston and all of their families have been notified. Photos of the victims were posted on a board behind Commissioner Mike Sauschuck as he read the names at a news conference Friday. A moment of silence followed the reading of the names. Sauschuck also said officials have lifted a shelter-in-place order for communities instituted after the mass shooting Wednesday night, but the search for the suspect continues. On Friday, investigators continued to work at the two shooting scenes and divers joined the effort along the Androscoggin River, near where the suspect’s car was found.

Federal News Network ☛ US fighter jets strike Iran-linked sites in Syria in retaliation for attacks on US troops
The Pentagon says U.S. fighter jets launched airstrikes early Friday on two locations in eastern Syria linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. The strikes come in retaliation for a slew of drone and missile attacks against U.S. bases and personnel in the region that began early last week. They reflect the Biden administration’s determination to maintain a delicate balance. The U.S. wants to hit Iranian-backed groups suspected of targeting the U.S. as strongly as possible to deter future aggression, while also working to avoid provoking a wider conflict. The U.S. does not have any information yet on casualties or an assessment of damage from Friday's strikes.

Bruce Schneier ☛ Friday Squid Blogging: On the Ugliness of Squid Fishing
And seafood in general:
A squid ship is a bustling, bright, messy place. The scene on deck looks like a mechanic’s garage where an oil change has gone terribly wrong. Scores of fishing lines extend into the water, each bearing specialized hooks operated by automated reels. When they pull a squid on board, it squirts warm, viscous ink, which coats the walls and floors. Deep-sea squid have high levels of ammonia, which they use for buoyancy, and a smell hangs in the air. The hardest labor generally happens at night, from 5 P.M. until 7 A.M. Hundreds of bowling-ball-size light bulbs hang on racks on both sides of the vessel, enticing the squid up from the depths. The blinding glow of the bulbs, visible more than a hundred miles away, makes the surrounding blackness feel otherworldly...

The real Danger in connected cars
The future of the car will be connected or it won't be, many engineers have said … That's not the future, that's a reality in every new cars on the market. Apple Carplay, Android Auto are everywhere. But it's not just the interface that turns a car into a connected car. A car can now transmit informations to an emergency centre to help you or to rescue you (eCall). Vehicle to infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle to network (V2N), Vehicle to cloud (V2C), Vehicle to device (V2D) are exemples of connectivity. Updates are mostly done Over The Air (OTA), as we can see with Tesla Cars. I'm not going to talk about the dangers that have been cited for years, such as Privacy, Hackability and Reliability especially with CAN bus. Another one is known by everyone who has a smartphone for more than 5 years : Obsolescence. Did you know that the lifespan of a car is far more important than for a smartphone ? Of course you did. But did the car manufacturer and the GAFAM know it ? I'm not sure they did. In the USA, cars are 12,2 years old, in France it's 11 years old, more than 16 years old in many eastern Europe countries, far more than a smartphone (2-6 years).

It's over, probably. As I turn older and older, I've been gaming less and less. There are a few reasons for this personal phenomenon, chiefly, people my age aren't playing rpgs any more. They weren't that many back in the day. Occasionaly, I've been able to gather a few youngsters around my table, but they don't stick, my life being so different to us, and, I'm so detached from their lifes that, sometimes, it feels like generations are different countries altogether.
